Adamo  SCULTORI

Mantova ca. 1530 - Rome 1587

A lion attacking a horse

Engraving 131x177 mm. First state a of three (Bellini). After Giulio Romano. Lettered on stone in lower centre "AS". Related to a sculpture of the same subject now in the Capitoline Museum, having been displayed on the Capitoline at least as early as 1347. Adamo's print is most likely after a drawing by Giulio Romano, now lost. A superb, strong and contrasting early impression. Trimmed irregularly on or just into the platemark, with narrow margins around the borderline. In excellent condition.
